Spend a full day developing your blacksmithing skills with internationally-renowned guest tutor Adam Blackwell:
In 2006, Adam completed his degree in Architectural and Ornamental Forged Ironwork, leading to a successful career in the conservation and restoration of historic ironwork. In 2016, he was appointed Head Lecturer of the BA (Hons) Artist Blacksmithing programme at Hereford College of Arts.
Alongside exhibiting and lecturing internationally, Adam has built a strong reputation for his creative approach to pedagogy, mentoring students in the development of both their artistic identity and technical expertise. In 2023, he was awarded the Freedom of the City of London and became a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths.
Adam will guide you in forging a bee hotel using some or all of the six essential forging techniques:
Bending
Drawing Down (reducing a section of steel to a point)
Jumping Up (increasing a section of steel)
Punching (making a hole)
Cutting (using a hot-set or chisel)
Fire Welding (joining two pieces of metal in the forge)
Participants will use some or all of these techniques to create a piece of work to take home.
In addition to this, you will have a fascinating insight into the history and mystery of forge work and blacksmithing.
You will need to bring:
Enthusiasm, a sense of humour, a willingness to learn and some lunch. We will provide the rest!
